Heather Hokanson, a senior at Cheyenne‘s South High School, was awarded the USS Wyoming Committee’s Dick Cheney Scholarship for the upcoming 2021-22 academic year. She was selected amongst a pool of Wyoming high school seniors who applied from across the state.

She is the daughter of Neil and Dianna Hokanson and will be attending Laramie County Community College in the Fall to pursue a degree in secondary education.

The scholarship was presented to her at South High School’s Senior Award Ceremony on May 19, 2021 by the Committee’s President, CAPT Jeff Hoy, USN (Ret.).

The Dick Cheney Scholarship was established in 1995 by the USS Wyoming Committee as part of its mission to foster an enduring relationship between the people of our state and the crews (Blue & Gold) of the USS Wyoming (SSBN-472), a Trident Class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine that is currently based in Kings Bay, Georgia. The scholarship honors former Vice President Cheney, who was instrumental in naming the ship during his tenure as Secretary of Defense. The annual competitive scholarship award ($1,000) is based on excellence in leadership, academic performance, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future career success.
